Dellenback Dunes Storm Coming by jgpittenger

Dellenback Dunes Storm Coming

Went on a long hike on the dunes yesterday with Pearl, Jim, my youngest son, and his dog. This was just before we got drenched and the wind started blowing hard. I like how the footprints add a sense of story. Best on black if you have time.
Thanks so much for your visits, comments, suggestions, favs. Our internet is slightly better today so I will do my best to comment on your photos
A real sense of foreboding :)

Love those footprints in the sweeping curve! Amazing winter beach scene! Bet you were invigorated by that walk!

I like the curves in this scene. One thought I have in looking at this (I saw your request to Richard so hope it's okay to offer one up) -- the hills that curve mirror to some extent what looks like tracks in the snow or sand. But the tones don't bring out the curves that much. I wonder if you used lighting and increased contrast to make more of the layers of curves.

I really like the composition here but, for me, this lacks drama. The brightest part of the image is the sky at the top and the darkest is the mid-ground, I would want that the other way round. I don't know what you use for editing but I would raise the overall brightness level and boost the mid-range contrasts and then add a gradient to the sky to reduce the brightness at the top and left. You can fine tune individual areas to maintain a sense of balance . This has the potential to be a great image... Good Luck! @taffy

An afterthought as I've just looked at the Exif data: you've exposed this at f/4 and 1/4000 sec - I would have gone for front to back detail and shot this at f/11 and 1/500 sec which would also have suited the Sony 16mm better as it can be soft at wider apertures. Actually, I would probably have slowed the shutter even more given that camera metering will usually under-expose sand (and snow).

Me again! It helps enormously when you are shooting to switch the camera to display B&W in the EVF and if you shoot Raw and Jpeg together, you'll get a B&W Jpeg and a colour Raw file.

@vignouse you are so kind to spend so much time helping me here. I’ve been gone all day but will fiddle again tomorrow. I had to laugh re my exif! I had it set to catch puppy action and was so absorbed enjoying talk8ng with my son that I spaced out changing it for landscape...dummy!
