Blue Heron in the Bushes

I'm so happy that the parks are all open again here and hope that people will follow social distancing and mask wearing guidelines so we don't have an upsurge followed by another lockdown! Taken on my and Black Pearl's favorite trail...South Jetty trail.
Thanks for your visits, comments, suggestions, favs

Such a beautiful bird and nicely captured. Excellent detail and color. Suggestion... leave a little more room behind the bird and crop a little more off of the right side... just a thought and completely my opinion.

Beautiful capture with wonderful details, especially on the eye. Do you use spot metering to achieve this Jane? I am playing around everyday and trying to find the best way to achieve such wonderful dof too. I get dof behind the subject, but not front and back together :-(

You've caught him an such a classic pose. How lovely that you and Black Pearl can get out and hike again - it would probably be hard to guess which one of you would be happier! :)

Lovely capture Jane.

@ludwigsdiana I assume you mean single point focus not spot metering...I use manual exposure f 5.6 and s of 2000 more or less depending on bird and auto ISO. For focus I use continual af with small or medium sized focus point aiming for the head of the bird. I’m guessing the blur front and back was The 5.6 (widest aperture my lens goes to) and long focal length and switching from full frame to crop is what did it. Hope that helps

@jgpittenger Thanks so much Jane, it all makes sense. My camera has different apertures and no fixed one. I will definitely continue trying :-)
