American Avocets At the Beach

I saw this pair at Washburne Beach yesterday and thought they reminded me of American Avocet which I have never before seen at the beach. I've seen them more inland in marshes. When I got home I checked my bird book and clearly they are avocets. I wonder if they are here because of all the fires and smoke interfering with their usual migration route.
