Killdeer Distracting Us from Her Nest

I've read before about killdeer pretending to be wounded to distract people or animals from their nest. Today I got to see it in action. I didn't get many shots in focus because she kept getting on the other side of weeds and grass, but I was pretty happy with this one. All the amazing things we see when we are on our daily hike!

I just love killdeer - their dedication to their young is phenomenal. Watched one this spring near our school's driveway. She sat on those eggs through all kinds of weather until they finally hatched and they all scampered into the weeds for safety.
