Stop

I thought the pose with his paw stretched forward looked as if he were saying "stop. Don't come any closer." Of course we couldn't since he was on the other side of a fence. He'd been playing with the branch. I'm of mixed feelings re zoos like this one...hate to see the king of beasts busying himself with playing with a branch, but this particular zoo treats the animals well and they have lots of space to roam, and I love to get to see them. And just maybe our ability to see them up close can help remind us that this earth and its creatures are precious and need our thoughtful protection.

I agree with you completely. Zoos are much better these days, and with the breeding programmes etc, is perhaps the only way some species will survive. I was at the zoo on Monday

Not everyone gets to see these magnificent animals in the wild and I agree with you that if we see them like this we will be more mindful of all the other animals that might otherwise just be forgotten or ignored!

'Talk to the hand'. Haha. I also have mixed feelings about zoos, and don't tend to go to them anymore.

Great timing with his hand 'just so.' Tells a story beyond the majesty of this 'sleepy' lion.

Zoos and aquariums are very controversial right now, but I think that they are bringing an awareness to the public about the fragility of the planet. Wonderful capture.

it does look like they are well kept - not like the underweight & battle weary ones I photographed in Kenya
