The low light ability of these newer DSLR's with their high ISO ranges is unbelievable. Hanging out by the water front (freezing in this weather) I was hoping to catch a sunset shot that did not happen. Instead I got this blue on blue night shot.
After the light was gone and it was pretty dark, I tried a few long exposures off the pier into the Long Island Sound. I used a fast but not superfast ISO of 1200. The exposures times I varied from about 1 to 4 seconds hand holding the camera braced up against the railing.
About a dozen shots of trial and error led to this gem.
Beautiful shot. If my camera is set on automatic, I often get a high ISO but other photographers on this site tell me I shouldn't use anything higher than 100 or 200. I don't understand why it goes up to 3200 if we shouldn't use it.
@vernabeth Beth - use higher Iso's. 100 and 200 limit you so much. The higher the iso the more noise you get. should not become a issue until you go over 800-1000 but then it is the only way to get some photos like my last several night shots. trade lack of ;ight for noise
Nice capture. True what your saying about the expose. I got a great waterfall shot a couple of months ago. I couldn't see the falls; but an 8 second exposure was great and showed detail like it had been daylight.
Blue On Blue by Bobby Vinton immediately came to mind when I saw your photo. So I went to youtube and played his song and it matches perfectly!! Love your photo!! FAV
Wow, that is beautiful, I went on a course recently and the tutor must have assumed we had new cameras because he told everyone to set it at 2000 iso. I stopped laughing about half an hour later
great blues Joseph - agree with the capability of SLR's to catch scenes in ultra low light...got some cracking ones in the Dales this weekend way past dusk!
This is beautiful. I know my newer camera should be capable of shooting in these modes, but I'm still trying to figure it out. I'm glad you included some of the process here, I'll try to remember this and try it out myself. Great shot!
