Pouch mystery

The mothers sometimes relax the pouch opening like this, but urk... what is that?, looks like a weirdly long teat hanging out there. You can see a small teat there as well, that seems normal size. A mystery...
Perhaps, TMI. But still very interesting.

Perhaps they only use one teat - the other's a spare. It always amazes me how they cram such big joeys into the pouch

They are unusual creatures. Great capture, Joanna!

when joey attaches as a pinky it remains attached to just one teat for some months. so that teat stretches and the other doesn't. joey will then likely only drink from that teat. next joey may or may not attach to the same teat :)

great shot it's not often you get such a clear view into the pouch!

@koalagardens thank you for that information, certainly something l didn't know that the teat could stretch that much, its such a different size to the other teat you can see in the pouch

How intriguing that the can relax the pouch like that, nice information from koalagardens,. Just love the expression you have caught on young joey

Urk and Yuk! I expect the one she is standing by, hangs on to this teat!

What a delight to see - definitely something I'd never seen before.

Awesome capture. Wouldn't have thought one that large would still be going to the pouch, or is it. Interesting about them though.

Interesting shot Joanna - and don't some of the joeys just take forever to be weaned? Poor mothers.

Wow. I've never seen an open pouch before. Is it to cool off?

Very opportunistic Joanna. Never seen that before and I just read koalagardens description.

@nobled don't think its to cool down. You don't see thils often, the joey had just been feeding.

@rickster549 no longer getting in the pouch but still feeding from mum
