Waiting for the big one by joansmor

Waiting for the big one

We took a quick drive to the beach yesterday. Caught some turkeys (on my sisters bucket list for this visit) and some beach scenes. Did this in bw because the boards were not brightly colored.
Love this in black and white - really brings out the textures.

I like it when typically color shots get changed up to black and white- and this one works really well thanks to the overall gray tone of the sand and the one "white" board.

Beautiful contrast.

They look like exotic sea creatures who have lost their way and their will to live.

@vignouse I like that thought. I was a little frustrated at not being able to lighten the sand more. This is HDR.

@joansmor I think the sand looks fine... but you could have lightened it in LR by masking off the boards using an adjustment brush or, better, by using an adjustment layer and layer mask in PS.

@vignouse I actually did it in PS with layers and masking but needed to get to work and quit working on it. But thanks. Guess my usual being hard on myself.

@joansmor I've reflected on this and, in retrospect, I think the best way to lighten the sand would be to dodge and burn using an Overlay 50% Grey layer... this tutorial will show you how if you need a refresher: http://www.photoshopessentials.com/photo-editing/dodge-burn/

Given the area of the boards relative to the area of the sand, I might be tempted to darken the boards and then lighten the whole image leaving the boards as before but the sand lighter... have fun!p

If you lighten the sand too much won't you loose the foot prints?

Nice mono

Very cool. I'd love to start some B&W. You're a great role model!!

Very nice in b&w.

@janiskay Not necessarily Janice: providing the highlights are not burned out the relatve contrasts in the image will bear the same relationship and the modelling effect will still operate.
