Littlehampton used to be a thriving port, with imports of wood from the Baltic countries and exports of sheep and chalk. More recently it was often used by gravel dredgers, bring shingle to be used in construction. Now it is more focused on sailors with small pleasure craft and the occasional fisherman.
I was on one of the dredgers that used Littlehamton in the 1970s, and used to drink in the pub near the bridge right on the river's edge. Looking at your shots it has change quite a bit since then.
@hobgoblin The Arun View is still there, but is more of a pub than a restaurant now and the Steam Packet re-opened last year after being closed for a while. You wouldn't recognise Pier Road and River Road now. All those old yards and factories have gone and have been replaced by flats. I'll take some photos and put them on my project.
@hobgoblin Hello John. I've just uploaded a photo of River Road in Littlehampton. The west bank of the river probably hasn't changed much, but the right-hand (east bank) is where the old warehouses and factories used to be. Now it is flats, a new lifeboat station and a restaurant. The old swing bridge has been replaced by a foot bridge, which you can just see in the distance. I'll try and get one from the bridge soon.
