My new 'Mom' brought me home today. We are still undecided as to what I shall be called. I have had a busy crazy week. I have had 3 homes in the past week. I was running free on the Navajo Nation when I was picked up before the county gave me a new home. A foster Mom then brought me to her house where I played with her pack. I then met a nice couple who told me that I could have a forever home in Flagstaff. We got back into the bumpy thing (car) to end up at my new house and yard. I scoped out my yard and snacked a bit and am now sleeping.
We are so very pleased to welcome our new family member, a rescue from the Navajo Nation. These pups are often called 'Res Dogs'. We are still in negotiations on her name. I am leaning towards Winona. (Winona is a feminine given name, an Anglicized form of the Dakota descriptive term, Winúŋna, meaning "firstborn daughter.") She is a border collie, about 25 pounds and a year or less old. I am so happy to have her join our family.
She is very pretty and will give you many fun times. Border collies are so smart. My sister has four of them. She also shows and trains them. They keep her very busy. I like that you are thinking of a Navajo name for her.
Good on you for taking the responsibility. My friend rescued a dog who was formerly abused by his male owner, it took a year for him to get the dog be just a little comfortable with people, and still not happy when approached by male. Find a name you can easily sing out.
Welcome to your forever home Winona, get reading for lots of loving attention and TLC after your terrible start to life. Your history has some strong similarities to our beloved rescue dog, Maggie, now with us four years and counting.
Border Collies are such versatile dogs and am delighted that you've given your home to her. Princesse was a severely damaged animal when she came to us and didn’t bark until she’d been with us for 3 weeks. She became something of a local K9 personality. Looking forward to learning her definitive name.
Oh, are you giving her a forever home? Wonderful. Congratulations! I envy you. I wish I could give a home to a dog, but am too old. Winona is a beautiful name. Please post pictures of her as often as you can.
Border collies are the best dogs. I would advise you to visit the Blipfoto site https://www.blipfoto.com/mollycollie where Molly tells how her owner, Ann, adopted her from the RSPCA in January 2005. Molly had a very bad start in life, but is today a beautiful dog and tells herself her story on their site every day. :-)
@fbailey So sorry to hear about your loss. I just made the leap again, its been 3 years since our Holly, a chocolate lab left. This little girl is about a 1/4 size of Holly.
@henrir I am amazed that someone who leave pups out there to fend for themselves. I admire the people who capture and foster them. There is a whole network of kind souls. I feel so graced to be able to have her.
@rjb71 She is smart and today she made greater strides of exploration. I know that I will have to keep on my toes with her.
@wardsy75 Thank you so much. I feel lucky to have her.
@yaorenliu To be able to open my home and heart to a rescue dog helps make me whole.
@golftragic Winona is our 3rd rescue, she is by far the youngest one too. I wonder if she is under a year but the vet will let us know.
@30pics4jackiesdiamond She will be my photo buddy. I hope to be able to get her to tag along with me when I explore the surrounding wilder areas.
@s4sayer So far, a few little barks. She is still shy but getting braver. We will definitely be attending obedience lessons. I just couldn't resist her.
@ingajohansson Will be good for me. I walk all the time so I think that I will adjust to several shorter walks each day. When she gets more accustomed to us I hope we will be photo buddies.
@domenicododaro Thank you so kindly for the fav. I just felt it was time to take one in again. It has been 3 years since our other girl left. I am truly looking forward to having a photo buddy to travel around Northern Arizona with.
@octogenarian Truly grateful for the fav. She is a sweet thing and will be nothing short of a blessing. To open our home again to a rescue will be an adjustment but it is time. Not knowing her beginnings may cause some issues but so far she is just so gentle.
@gardenfolk You are so very kind, very grateful for the fav. Having a dog again just seems so right. I was getting my dog 'fix' by driving as a volunteer for the rescue network but I am so lucky to have met this gem of a pup. She is getting braver each day.
@golftragic The foster Mom who helped find her for me also had a make about the same size. It seems that maybe they might have been little mates, not sure. I am thinking to break up my long walk into smaller ones so that we get out a lot. When she is more comfortable around me, she will hopefully be my photobuddy.
What a moving photo and story! She is beautiful and you are wonderful to rescue her. Our best dog ever had a rough start in life and had to learn to trust men, but she grew devoted to all of us. We still miss her!
@vignouse There was never a question about getting another rescue but timing was my concern. She is smart as a whip and such a gentle personality, we are so so lucky to have her join our family.
@jo38 She has never seen snow and its coming. Could be a most interesting experience.
@eudora I am very happy to have met and adopted her. I've had two other rescues but they were a bit older and bigger too, a chocolate lab and a golden/lab mix. I miss them so very much. Not sure if we will go the agility route with this one but training for me to learn how to she 'works' is on tap.
