March 2018-4

On our Sunday walk by the Hamble River I couldn't find any photographic inspiration until it dawned on me that at least if I got to take some bird snaps, then I could later identify them. The photographer bit then kicked in. Just how do people take GOOD bird photos? OK so this one is not technically great and it's heavily cropped, but the bird is beautiful. My books tell me it's a greenshank. Any helpful advice is welcome!
hi Jacquie - you've done well with this. Yes, I do think it's a greenshank. I'm not sure about the capabilities of the Canon 70D but if you can change the ISO to 1250 (yes it is high!) and work on AV setting with an aperture of f8, the camera on a sunny day should shoot at not less than 1/2000th of a second. If you really want to learn more, I'd enthusiastically recommend one of Nina Bailey's workshops (Canon Ambassador) - look at the EOS Training website and/or http://www.eos-magazine.com/ebooks/es/birds.html You'll see what a difference it makes - look at my recent birds in flight images. The very fast shutter speed makes it all possible. A longer lens would help too!

Thank you Susan for all your advice here, and for passing on what you recently learned at the Photography Show. It’s very much appreciated. You’ve certainly taken some stunnning flight images recently. A longer lens would indeed help, but I’d still have to learn to use it properly.
