KRAP

photo 145
An old sign downtown for what used to be a public parking lot, now all the spots are reserved. Some of the neon tubes are still there, but there's no juice going to the sign anymore.

Interesting take on the spelling. Love the gritty feel to it!!

@marlboromaam Thank you!!! I almost didn't see the sign because I never pay attention to the lot when I drive by because there's nothing special there and I know I can't park there... but I caught a glimpse and had to go around the block (well, multiple blocks thanks to the one way streets)

@northy thank you!

@maggotx thanks!

What a great old sign! I probably would have driven by it myself!

@groovygirlrn I keep finding cool things in and around our downtown, so I may end up doing quite a few urban decay type shots

Very gritty. I like it.

I think these only signs are worth restoring... real retro! And somebody probably found out they could make a buck by selling reserved parking spots.
posted May 25th, 2012
@kellc thank you Kelly! I have 2more versions of this sign, but this was my favorite
posted May 25th, 2012
@calm I would love to see them at least restore the neon and light it up!

Oh - awesome title and shot. Took me a bit longer than it should have. Very fun!

Awesome urban decay shot! Neat processing, really brings out the dirty texture. It's amazing all the cool stuff we pass by every day without really seeing it -- very glad you are looking! Oh and your title made me laugh. :)

@beachradish I never saw the KRAP until I uploaded the pic onto the laptop... the Pov makes it look like KRAP :D

did you do a cross process on this? i like the colors and cross process gives some nice results in color i think
posted May 25th, 2012
@paulaag yes, CP in Lightroom - which helps the neon tubing show up, and then the intrepid option in Picmonkey to add to the mood of the photo. Not a lot
posted May 25th, 2012
Excellent, looks almost post apocalypic, and that is a very good thing! Awesome processing, too!
posted May 25th, 2012
Very cool! So amazing how you can find what some people consider junk and turn it into art. Great job!

Like this Krap! I have been thinking of pic'ing signs of our area. On road trip last week, saw one that said "Jesus, the hope of Newton County". I thought that a very interesting and thought provoking sign. Another said, "Neosho, home of the largest flower box in the world!" Or maybe it was planter box, can't remember for certain!

@mrfoxon thanks Mr!

@copperheadglass I've only been able to do that since my mom passed away... something about losing her altered how my mind processes what I see.

@dauber so many signs are seen but not noticed,which is why I think they make great subjects for photography. Whether they are vintage, or retro, or have cool neon, unique sayings, etc... there's something to pull out of them

Sorry it took losing your mom to gain this new view. Emotion is such a big part of the creative process.
posted May 25th, 2012
@copperheadglass I try to look at it as God giving me something I didn't have as a consolation gift for losing her.
