Monarch Butterflies by judithdeacon

Monarch Butterflies

This evening we went to Mamukala Wetlands and discovered literally hundreds of Monarch Butterflies on a specific type of plant, I suppose they must have been laying their eggs, anyone with any better knowledge I would be pleased to know?
Wow - what a beautiful find and photo! Fav.

This is amazing Judith! I see photos of multiple monarchs on here as they migrate through USA somewhere - but then it dawned on me that you are in Australia!!!! I know down here in the south they love the milky swan bush (don't know correct name) so I'm guessing that is what they are on. They actually lay their eggs on these bushes and the caterpillars love to eat them - if you break a little branch, it will ooze a milky substance. And now a fav for this wonderful shot! Sorry for the "novel" :)

@gilbertwood thanks for all the info. We will be going back to Mamakala Wetlands today (despite the mossies! ) and I will photograph the plant and see if I can identify it. I googled your suggestion and it doesn't look like this. There were literally 50+ on each little bush. Very difficult to capture as there were flitting too and fro.
