Paper Wasp by judithdeacon

Paper Wasp

We visited Great Dixter Garden at the weekend and what an amazing garden it is. The insects were abundant in all the plants. Lots of wasps and on doing a bit of research I discovered that there are over 7000 different species of wasps in the UK! For someone who is severely allergic to wasp stings this was not something I wanted to hear! I think I have identified this one as a Paper Wasp but would be delighted to be corrected if anyone knows any better!
Fantastic picture.

Oh dear, run. My sister in law was stung by a paper wasp and ended up in hospital on IV drip because she had a really bad reaction to it.
David was stung a few weeks ago too while mowing the lawn under one of our trees. He didn't see the wasp nest under one of the branches, but the wasp saw him. Ouch.

Don't worry Judith, I almost always have at least one wasps nest either in garden or house every year. Not found this years yet. Not been stung at home for years. That's despite doing macro photography, really close to individual insects or right at the nest entrance.
Wasps are designed to look nasty, and can be. However many other insects have cottoned on to this, and look like a wasp to avoid problems. Your 7,000 UK species include saw flies and ichumen flies, ( wasps), some with what appear to be huge long stingers. They pose no problem to you unless you are a caterpillar or wood boring grub. Then they might use that great long ovipositor to lay an egg in you. Then their larva eat the prey from the inside.
The ones you might need to careful near are called social wasps. We have seven species, and all look very similar. This time of year they are still hunting other insects / caterpillars to feed to the young. Come September/ autumn, the Queen leaves and the workers now redundant can be a pain looking for sweet sugary substances.

PS that one does look like a real Wasp and not a copy cat.

Really sharp capture of this wasp. I've been stung enough times that I'm nervous around them.
