There was an slight mist yesterday if the sun was at the correct angle and I am resisting enhancing this picture of Bridge Street to remove it! This part is C17th and narrowly escaped demolition in the 1970's when the city council was on a 'renovation' drive. They obliterated one on the most famous historic streets, Petty Cury and replaced it with nondescript shop units, but luckily local opposition groups got themselves organised and saved Bridge Street. The street (as the name suggests!) runs towards the river and the old Quayside area where boats were unloaded after travelling upriver from King's Lynn. Illegal glass imports from Murano which included prisms eventually bought by Isaac Newton were no doubt unloaded somewhere less obvious but other goods were destined for Quayside and Bridge Street supplied the workers with prostitutes and was also home to opium dens. I have featured one of the 'interesting' carvings before and you may get another one at some point. I took this from halfway down Castle Street which runs in to Bridge Street. Castle Street is one of the few proper hills in the area and leads up to the site of Cambridge Castle which enjoyed a period of restoration in the C17th century due to the civil war so this must have been a busy thoroughfare.
Three good things:
1. Our 28th wedding anniversary
2. Very good afternoon trip to see 'All the Money in the World' at the cinema.
3. Catching up with Jeremy & Linda over Thai curry and Nigel giving me a push on the cycle ride home.
Happy belated wedding anniversary Nigel & Judith. You have found a hill, very interesting street. If only walls could talk! Cycle shop seems relevant in Cambridge!
This looks familiar! Ellen is loving Magdalene. It's hard to believe she's now in her second year. I'm very out of touch with everyone on here. What are your children doing now?
I like the mist - glad you left it.
