I took the car to the garage today for a new 'handbrake computer'. Yes, I know, your old-fashioned manual handbrake had no need of a computer and so it never need mending. Anyway - it's under warranty so it's only inconvenience... The garage is in an unattractive industrial area but you can drop down to the common quite easily and so I took Monty and walked him home along the riverside. I've seen this letterbox before and have been 'saving it' to see if I can persuade somebody in the family to don a mohican haircut and walk behind it for me. Unfortunately they have let me down (!) so I've had to settle for a cyclist in red. I've no idea why it has spikes on top.
Interesting shot, and the composition is just perfect. I know exactly why the spikes are there ... to deter the postman from sitting down (or up) on the job! .... Next question, please?
@scatcat Well I had wondered about pigeons but as far as I know it's the only postbox in town with them - on the other hand the river is just behind the cyclist so maybe it's to deter ducks! (Or maybe there was once a seagul problem!) @wordpixman - LOLL - My drunken friend once slid head-first off the top of a letterbox - ouch! I also had a theory about it stopping burglars climbing over the wall of the neighbouring house but on inspection today that's a rubbish idea!

Wow, that's one wicked looking box top. It's obviously designed to deter something. :) I see that your postmen work much later than ours over here...I don't think I've ever seen a later pickup time than 5 pm. Wonderful look at that punk style box. :)
They do look vicious looking spikes & what a mystery. I have never seen one like that before !! How convenient that your cyclist had a red top on or did you make Monty hover about until one the right colour came along ? Great composition !!
Oh my I laughed more at the fact that you got a BICYCLE into the shot!!! But that is one funky mailbox. Love it. You have just the coolest perspective on things!
