I've failed today - this is a photo from Monday! I went over to visit my friend who has a 21 month old and a 3 month old this morning and we did park and coffee shop - what made me think I would have time to get my camera out I don't know!! Mind you Rosie's little eyes when she saw her 'Babyccino' would have made a good shot - they nearly popped out! Then I thought I would rescue the situation by walking over to All Souls' graveyard at dusk to get a nice sunsetty/topical shot - only to find the sunset didn't materialise, the light was so low that a shot with dog in hand was impossible and the graveyard had a big sign saying 'closes at dusk' and while I didn't mind being there as it was going dark I didn't fancy being locked in!! Anyway this is Magdelene College with its cherry trees which were equally beautiful in Spring. The name is pronounced 'Maudlyn' and I'm quoting from the college website about why, 'The College at its refoundation by Lord Audley in 1542, was dedicated to St Mary Magdalene. The choice of the name of Mary Magdalene appears to have had a touch of vanity. In many early documents, the name is clearly spelt as pronounced: 'Maudleyn', containing within it the name of Audley himself!' It was the last all male college in the university, voting to go mixed in 1986 in a move which didn't gain universal approval. When I arrived in 1986 there was a group called 'Black October' in a reference to the date of the vote. It had a reputation for being very snobbish but now has a very even mix of men and women and has made great strides in increasing its state school intake.
So glad you posted this as it's too good to sit in your computer !!!! I love those punts on your river & particularly like them all lined up neatly & then to add that wonderful red burst of tree colour too, wow !!!!
Have wondered sometimes when watching University Challenge why they use that pronunciation so thank you for telling us !!
How absolutely gorgeous!! Such a beautiful setting. Happy to know that Maudlyn is now unsnobbishly coed.
You get points for having your camera today even if you didn't have a chance to use it. :)
Stunning stunning photo - I love it. I very rarely get to actually post each days photo on here as really don't get the time so I wouldn't worry. It was only Monday that you took it and it is for this project so wonderful. Glad you put this on!
@happypat Well I just thought they were pretentious! I went on their website to check the co-ed bit and they had a whole page on the name - you live and learn!
autumnal colours never fail to make a big impact in photos...love those cherry trees and there are even some leaves on the river too.
You'll have to visit here if we get a 'haw frost' as it will make a lovely winter scene too... Ha Ha I gave you a free pic Judith .......i look forward to seeing it :)
Excellent photo, as ever, and lovely colours. A lot of leaves have come down over the past couple of days, so I think this scene may now be past its best.
Best laid plans....and all that. But the story is interesting. And I never knew that cherry trees were spectacular in other seasons as well, glad you captured it so nicely!
Lovely shot , and teh trees do indeed look autumn fiery red.
