My mother-in-law bought us this Christmas wreath about ten years ago and it's done great service. She lives in a nursing home now and doesn't really know that it's Christmas and I feel a bit sad when I put the wreath up and make the nut roast from her hand-written recipe. I think I'll treat it to a new ribbon next year.
great shot Judith - great that the wreath has lasted so long! and now it'll last forever with this shot! The best I've got of hand me downs is a sack for presents that my granny gave when i was young...I still insisit presents are put in it!
I went caroling with the youth of our church to an alzheimer's unit at a local nursing home. I am not sure if they knew it was Christmas or not, but all seemed familiar with jiggle bells enough to clap or sing along. I hope she find some joy in the small things this Christmas season.
@samdan I think it's because of the rituals - doing things essentially the same each year makes you remember how they were done before. Mind you the kids don't seem to be sentimental at all - either we've gone wrong or it will come when they're older!
@clairelizteuber That sounds like a great event and it's good to get the youngsters helping out older people for mutual enjoyment. She's quite happy and will enjoy all the food and festivities but when I read the recipe it's a reminder of how much she's lost.
Great cropping. I can feel your care for her come through too. I have a Santa ornament that used to be my dad's. He was born in 1902...sadly long gone but I think of him every time I hang the santa
@judithg lol - i'll buy you a week's worth with your name emblazened on them...even 15 year old boys wouldn't be seen dead with socks with "Judith" on them!!!
lovely shot and nice to have those memories - I tried to get the toddlers I was working with to produce decorations that would last and not embarrass them for those reasons (3 different kinds of angels) - and yes, socks sound a wonderful present - it's what my daughter is asking for too
I like the letterbox effect & this beautifully simple wreath is different from every one else's, it looks lovely against your white front door. Christmas does make you feel very nostalgic for times past & I think that's why us women folk try so hard at Christmas so that our families remember the time with happy memories.
Such a beautiful image. The crop is so perfect. Your mother-law-would be pleased to know the wreath is up and looking so elegant. For all the good cheer and merriment, Christmas is certainly not without its moments of melancholy in all our cherished memories. Wishing you a very special Christmas, Judith.
Love the story's going on in this thread, alas I have no Christmas hand me downs
