Brief Encounter by judithg

Brief Encounter

I've been back and forth with B&W and colour in this shot and still can't decide if it's the right decision. Taken at the 'Town and Country Show on Parker's Piece - it's like a cross between a glorified school fete and an inadequate country show with big horses, tiny horses (super cute but so short the pen precluded photos), goats & hens to give the farm vibe but fun for a walk around - except that I had to walk round three times trying to find a sweet stall as a promise to Adam. And then I decided to to walk back via the Sunday market and accidentally gave a busker £1 instead of 50p - a token effort because he was pretty bad but singing a song I like - which meant that I only had £1.70 on me and the cheapest sweet thing on the market was £1.99. Anyway the photo - Bedfordshire steam enthusiasts - lots of steamy things from tiny to huge and a collection chiefly of men of a certain age swarming around them, with one exception (2 if you count me).
Three good things:
1. Run with Rachel before breakfast and I'm still alive.
2. Nearly 3 hours walking with Monty this afternoon.
3. I still have use of my legs (tomorrow may be another story).
Well, I'm really liking the b&w here!

This is fabulous. fav for sure. I love the b and w and the steam and the couple leaning over it checking it out...their posture and her bag really make the shot

Perfectly balanced shot with puff of steam as well. I like it I. Black and white, sometimes colour detracts from the subject. Fav

Looks so old-fashioned.

@lucypics Thanks - I imagined it was rather like walking round your back garden - with added steam!

Great shot, they look as is they are having an illicit conversation whilst trying to look interested in the steamy thing!

I'd say b&w was definitely the right decision - gives this a timeless feel. I really love the moment you captured - a fav for me :). I feel sorry for Adam that he didn't get any sweets after all. And I'm really proud of your energy - wow!

She looks exactly like Susannah York & this could be a film set too...black & white definitely the right choice giving it a vintage look! Just noticed your title, how clever you are !!!

@fueast @happypat Just Googled Susannah York and I hope the lady doesn't get wind of this discussion because she's a good 25 years too young - maybe she's her daughter!
June 9th, 2013
@judithg ok a young susannah York. Seriously you had to google her?
June 9th, 2013
When in doubt, always err on the side of B&W. :-) Haven't seen the color version, but love this pic as is. I think B&W works very well for this image - nice job!

This is a really cute steam engine! Some of ours are so big they almost break up the road while moving along! Its super in B&W - nice and clear!

Great shot, love the b&w and the steam.
June 10th, 2013
Love how SHE's looking at the engine and HE's looking at HER!
June 10th, 2013
monochrome works well here judith...although traction engines usually have nice vibrant colours to capture .....I like the "waft" of smoke / steam coming out of the funnel
June 10th, 2013
The body language here makes this shot! That, and the retro processing. Fav
June 10th, 2013
I love how the two of them are leaning in towards eachother :) It was the buskers lucky day!

Can't comment on the photo as have tears streaming down my face reading your about your exploits. The £ and 50p comment is priceless - well 2 x 50p :)

I enjoyed your tales of today's exploits although running before breakfast? Bloody hell!

And one has to love steam enthusiasts. They're of a type Bedfordshire does rather well.

I'm thinking the b&w works well here to show off the steam and the vintage feel. Yikes - that a lot of leg work in one day!
