When I was walking Monty to the hairdressers I spotted a baby hedgehog scuffling about a scrubby bit of land. On the way back he was still there. Having a recollection from somewhere that hedgehogs out in the daytime are generally in trouble I called the local hedgehog hospital at Shepreth. She told me to look for others as there should be 4 or 5 and as I was busy saying, 'No there's only one...' another three materialised. So I nipped in the shop next door and asked for a box and he messed about so long that when I came back there were only three. I summoned Nigel and we searched and searched for both number 4 and mum but no sign. So I delivered the three to Shepreth where the lovely lady said they were a bit dehydrated but otherwise in good condition and gave me her mobile in case I found number 4. Well number 4 is currently sitting in the middle of a bowl of cat food/rehydration solution (I couldn't get any lactose-free puppy milk to add) chomping away and awaiting collection. No jobs done but feeling a bit like @jantan and @lucypics in a satisfied sort of a way.
Three good things:
1. Cute babies which will definitely survive.
2. Even if mum is around she won't mind that they are gone as they are nearly old enough to fledge.
3. Book club tonight (the other one).
You are a saviour Judith, such good fortune you found them all....must have been quite exciting & your last little one eating out of Raffikis bowl how cute.
All the time at the back of your mind you would be thinking 'where's my camera?'
@tishpics@happypat@jgpittenger Quick update - the lady just called and she said they've already increased in weight from 87g to 97g so they must have needed the fluids. She said the mum will be going off to get pregnant again - they used to only have one litter a year but now they are having 2 so they are leaving the first lot before they are ready. The one I have here is a right character.
Ooh well done Mrs Dolittle2. Fantastic job done and yes I would have done exactly the same. A little advice ....... Now check for fleas. Big prickly fav for your efforts and for the cutest picture ever.
I'm so glad you managed to help them as hedgehogs are in danger so helping these little ones is helping them all to survive. Lovely shot of these dear little creatures. I haven't seen a hedgehog for ages
Fascinating stories and well done you! We tried looking after one over the winter but it didn't survive. I love your top photo - it looks like a mirror image!
Oooh, what a lovely collage and well done for looking out for them. It seems a bit odd that the Mum just goes off for whoopie before the babies are ready to be left though !
Not exactly huggable pets but cute pointless prickly buttons. The vet would tell you to be careful of ringworm which hedgehogs can have? You are very good to adopt them!
How lovely that you were able to rescue them. A Hedgehog Hospital. Marvelous. Do you look it up in the phone book under "Hedgehog Hospital"? And was Monty a good boy while you were collecting them?
@annemary Very sharp! @maggiemae@lucypics Apparently the fleas are hedgehog specific but they are full of ticks, worms & all sorts so they get tested and treated at the hospital & the survival rate shoots up. The random latex gloves I bought for some job or other years ago finally came into their own.
Wow...a nice home-ish shot after my return from Barcelona...if you have never been give it a thought, its a wow city more bikes than Cambridge...perhaps..lol...and thank god i have come back to summer...yippie...
Super cute. I haven't seen a hedgehog for YEARS! When we were little we used to earnestly put a big dish of bread and milk out for them whenever we saw one...I think I'm happiest not knowing what bread/milk does to a hedgehogs' insides.
ONLY JUST SEEN THIS.... CAN'T BELIEVE IT! (tags only work if you put them in the comments bits) I haven't seen a hedgehog for years - not even squashed on the roads. One of my kids saw one once because it got stuck in the goal net on his school field.
