I don't know why it was closed - must have been a do of some sort. I took Adam to St John's playing fields for a hockey game - I was going to make him get on his bike (OK for going - not so keen on coming home uphill after the first game of the season!) but then I thought I'd shove Monty in the back of Nigel's little car (he having borrowed my big one to get to Cardiff) and, after dropping Adam, walk him through town. I must say it was very lovely and I nearly ran over the parking meter time. It was sunny but not too hot and there was a lovely buzz around the town without the total tourist crush. Walking past the high walls on the corner of St Botolph's and Free School Lane I could hear the outdoor performance of Much Ado About Nothing going on on the other side - it sounded like some sort of Eastern European shindig and if I hadn't had a dog in tow I'd have definitely bought a ticket and joined the queue for the next performance. Then I listened to a youngster playing electric violin and wandered past Trinity where this lovely porter doffed his bowler hat and grinned at me after I'd taken his photo. Onwards around past the hockey pitch - no dogs allowed but there's a gap where the compost heaps are kept and the undergrowth had been cut back to I could get quite close to the pitch from the road - and Monty had a drink in the little stream that runs alongside and didn't bark and give me away. I had a chat to the driver of a cream Austin 6 who was waiting for the back gates of St John's to be opened so that he could drive up the long drive to collect the bride and groom and I momentarily regretted not taking advantage of the opportunity to get married in the chapel there. Then a quick dash back to the car and a return to the mass clear out that I've been having. My office area is now actually tidy - and my desk is clean - and I have been through box after box of random paperwork and sorted it out. I was shattered!
I saw the top,of this guys head & thought Judith! Funny how we know each other's styles!
Sounds a very pleasant day.....always so much to see & do in your town! I suppose you have that little lull I between term time & the bulk of the tourist season.
So very British......& I like his little turn up of the mouth!
Weddings in your Camebridge chapel ........I would have Ben very tempted! Jack & Lydia can get married in the beautiful chapel at their school too.....a great privilege that not many take up apparently!
Reading your write-up was like walking with you seeing all those nice little things - how lovely :)! Can I hire you to clean my desk as well - pretty please ;))?
