Return

I wanted to take our war memorial 'Coming Home' yesterday but travelling an hour each way to the hockey tournament prevented that. An enormous office block is being built behind him which is proving controversial but he's still handsome - further info in my main album.

Wonderful composition! I like how the colours of the office building match the colorus of the stone.

Wonderful Judith.....he almost looks like a diferent man from your larger picture. I enjoyed your commentary and its interesting to understand why he is looking behind him.

@jannaellen @Cherrill Cinemascope has corrected the exposure but changed the colour - the other photo has the true colours. He's metal of some sort - luckily he's to big for anybody to steal him and melt him down as has happened to some of our memorials....

@busylady Some sort of metal that has turned green with age (copper mix maybe??) - see above for why he's changed colour!

Such intricate detail here & he is a very handsome young man ! was he modelled on anyone special do you know ? The copper sheen gives it a sort of army colouring too !

@happypat @sparkle I've looked up Tait Mackenzie and he's pretty interesting! He was a surgeon and an athlete (his best friend at college invented basketball) and he used his detailed knowledge of anatomy, especially of the face, in his sculptures. He came to England in his late forties in 1914 with a view to joining up as a medic but ended up (with all the red tape) treating woulded soldiers in England and making prosthetic limbs. Quite a man - he also made the memorial in Edinburgh which is pretty handsome as well!

@judithg wow, what an amazing guy! they don't make men like them nowadays (or maybe they do but they are all hiding!!)

@judithg No wonder his sculpturing has such a movement to it , he knew his anatomy & put it to good use !!

Nice photo. Although I've passed this memorial many times, I've never looked at it closely enough to see the detail. I'll make sure I do next time I pass!
