Snakeshead Fritillary

Lovely to see these wonderful spring flowers growing in abundance in an orchard. They got the name "snakeshead" because the bud before it starts to open looks remarkably like a snake emerging.
They are beautiful - think I can see white ones in the background

Beautiful. We once had them in our garden, but for some reason they've all disappeared.

@gijsje They do seem to be rather temperamental! I have planted loads in our garden and usually only one or two come up. I'm told they favour ground that is very damp and preferably land which floods!

@sheilaw The ones I have planted in pots are still only buds

@leestevo They're probably too fond of boggy ground to do well in Australia I would think
