... after a week of unbelievably cold, wet and windy weather the farmers haven't wasted any time in cutting the grass to make hay while the sun shines! I must confess that I feel very nostalgic about the summer evenings many, many years ago when I would help the local farmers at hay-making time. Memories of collecting the small bales, and building them up into tall towers in the hay barn seem strange now it's all done by machines designed to cope with the enormous bales of today. It may have been hard work, but it was a very sociable time with locals all working together and passing around large flagons of Somerset Cider in the warm evenings of June surrounded by swooping swallows and the heady fragrance of new hay! Happy days!
This brings back memories! My father was a farm machinery dealer and many June evenings were spent on farmers' fields bringing in the hay. Even by moonlight!
Julienne what a beautiful description, you transported me straight back there in my imagination. The POV is terrific, I feel like I can smell the fresh mown hay!
@gijsje - it is a very busy time with everything at peak growth!
@bkbinthecity - it's lovely to have memories like that isn't it!
@yeshanghai - thanks!
@woofandweft1 - Lovely! You have to take advantage of every hour of good weather, especially if rain was forecast at hay making time!
@shirleybankfarm - It's very frustrating when there is work to be done and farmers just can't get on with it :(
@katrinastabback - there are few scents that are as evocative as freshly made hay on warm evenings!
@rickster549 - yes it is lovely to have blue sky again after the cold dull rain and wind
@christophercox - it sure is, but I wouldn't have the energy these days!
@copperband - thanks!
