Vapourer Moth Caterpillar (Orgyia antiqua)

This caterpillar looks to me as if it's been overdecorated! I love the tufts on its back that look like shaving brushes. The moths themselves are a bit hairy but mostly plain brown apart from a couple of white spots. The weird thing is that the females don't have wings! They hatch out, secrete pheromones to attract a mate, lay eggs and die. Not much of a life eh?

We have a book which is favourite with the grandchildren - The Very Blue Thingamajig - and this is the end result of a version of that story. Great colours - sad life for the female

@amyleewinfield - it does look a little scary and I guess that's the intention! It's not really dangerous but the hairs can cause a bit of skin irritation.

@gazdi - I won't argue ;) he is beautiful!

@rickster549 - it certainly is weird. It reminds me of the dragons the chinese construct for their carnivals

@shirleybankfarm @peterday - no I think most birds would be highly suspicious, and I agree Peter!

@jomo - not heard of that book! I'll have to look out for it

@smashpoet255 - yes, so very narcissistic!

@christophercox - Even being someone with a crazy surreal imagination, I think this one would be beyond anything I could dream up let alone create!

@yeshanghai @gijsje @nitrogene @hilarymeme @photographycrazy @shepherdmanswife @janiskay @rleidner @milaniet @thewatersphotos @777margo @thistle - thanks for the comments and favs - I really love this strange creature!

I raised a Vapourer caterpillar, it pupated but failed to completely eclose, poor little wingless girl.
Beautiful insect, beautifully presented.
