... just a few buildings nestling below Turn Hill, High Ham at the start of the Somerset Levels. I love the green of the ancient woodland and gentle sweep of the hill descending onto the wetlands. It's one of my favourite views from Turn Hill and I always enjoy the way the whole vista alters with the changing moods of the weather.
Amazing scene! I love the terms...a bit different from our American English, but very lovely! I suspect "Ham" is short for Hamlet, but what are "Levels"?
@thewatersphotos The Somerset Levels is an area of flat wetland in the county of Somerset. A few hundred years ago it would have been under water and since then areas of land have been reclaimed by the Romans when they were over here, and successive groups of people who did their best to make something of the land. In recent times there have been all sorts of land management schemes that have tried to maintain a balance between keeping areas of land which can be flooded at times of high rainfall to protect towns from flooding, whilst also keeping enough drainage to allow farming of the rest. It's not an easy task, and there have been floods fairly recently where villages and farms were completely inundated and cut off for months at a time.
@julienne1 Thank you for the explanation! This site/community has been so eye opening to me! I have met people, like you, from all around the world and seen things I might never be able to actually experience for myself. Thank you for sharing your part of the world with me!!
