This is a rather strange picture but it might capture a little bit of what it's like for the hundreds of thousands of starlings as they come in to roost on the reeds at Ham Wall RSPB reserve every evening. There is so much squawking and jostling for position as they valiantly try to settle down for the night .... and this evening there just didn't seem to be adequate room as the reeds bent under the weight of so many at once. Over and over again they took to the air and tried to find a better position while their neighbours shouted angrily and defended their own reed for the night. The reeds have taken such a battering in this favoured area that I expect some, or even all, of the flock will be moving to another patch of reeds in the next few days.
