Those in the UK who watched "Autumnwatch" last night will have heard about the recent dramatic decline in the insect population (75% in Germany). This is bad news for all of us as insects are vitally important in the biological food chain and as pollinators for so many plants on which we depend. One of the plants we need to encourage as a nectar source for insects this time of year is Ivy - it's late flowering provides immensely valuable nectar for so many insects. So Autumnwatch asked people not to just hack Ivy down and to allow it to grow where possible.
