Despite the ravages of Dutch Elm disease there are still some surviving English Elm trees. Young trees are still quite plentiful though some of them get the disease before they mature. Some people eat these green seeds in salads - they supposedly leave your mouth fresh and breath smelling pleasant! I can't say I've tried though.
And in Sheffield one which is 150 years old, has survived several episodes of Dutch Elm disease and supports a colony of rare White Hair Streak butterflies is to be felled!
