Marmalade hoverfly by julienne1

Marmalade hoverfly

This little hoverfly is feasting on nectar from a burdock flower. The adults eat nectar and pollen but their larvae are voracious consumers of the dreaded aphid which makes them very useful! Soon those burdock burrs will be tangling themselves up all over my spaniel's coat. They are so difficult to get out because of the velcro hooks on the end of each spine!
A wonderful capture and lovely detail, fav!

I always wondered about the purpose of hoverflies, I always thought of them as a bit of a nuisance! I shall now think kindly of them ;)
