I was lucky enough to go on a cruise on the Exe estuary today organised by the RSPB. We saw all sorts of estuary birds but most exciting of all was my first sighting of the avocets that over-winter here. This beautiful, graceful wader has been brought back from extinction, and with numerous conservation and protection measures is now increasing in numbers. It was such a treat to see so many of these birds feeding in the mud of the shoreline with their characteristic sweeping motion with that long curved beak. The RSPB has adopted the Avocet as their emblem - a great choice in my opinion!
Lovely birdie and a brilliant conservation story
