Today as I headed home from my few day's staying with my Sister I decided to take a little detour 'off the beaten track'.. and went to Waipu & Waipu Cove.. a lovely little village and the nearby beach seemed to be very popular.. I called into the local cemetry and what a fantastic final resting place ... Waipu was a very large Scottish settlement and it showed on all the headstones .. with McKay, Mackenzie, McClean, McDonald, McLeod being among the names I saw... And also Knowles @happypat have you got some rallies here...
What a lovely spot to be laid to rest , and those big sturdy tomb stones are there to stay no matter what the stormy seas will bring ! Or are all the Scotsmen finding solace in the fact the are within reach of the sea to travel home ! ( my imagination is at its best 1st thing in the morning !! )
It's a funny thing, I don't know why I've never checked before, but am I right in thinking you live on the Northern Island, not too far from Auckland? I know it's a long shot, but I don't suppose you've ever come across a family Thomson - they live near Auckland and have a small ranch there with lots of ponies - they've recently moved however, but still in the area. The daughter Ginny is in the New Zealand riding team. It would be a small world if you've come across them! But perhaps unlikely. It was your mentioning all the Scottish headstones that reminded me to ask! This is a beautiful photo and yes, what a great spot to end one's days!
Yes we are just south of Auckland and my husbands family are related to the Thompsons but the names you mention are not known to us.. but you never know there could be some connection.
Ha ha Julz, not yet thanks be! I wouldn't mind resting my head there! I akwYs say when I come over, if I pop my clogs when in NZ don't send me back, bury me in there, could pick this spot!
