Valentine's Day by jyokota

Valentine's Day

I did it! Don't you think this is a good depiction of a Valentine's Day scene? This guy kept studying his flowers while waiting for the right train to arrive. (I showed him afterwards and he said it was ok to post.)

@johnmnewman challenged me to capture movement by experimenting with shutter speeds and exposure times. Being the great get-pushed partner that he is, he gave me scaffolding with very informative tips and even a link to a sample photo. Because I didn't have a filter I took his suggestion to do this in a dark place. I studied many people's photos and noted shutter speeds, exposure, etc. @taffy and I had taken a brief group lesson on night time settings and some of those ideas could apply but I simply had not taken the time to ever practice setting my shutter speed. This was just the nudge I needed. Clearly, I still need a lot of practice, but here's my first "in motion" photo taken alone.

@michaelelliott -- I'm posting a separate photo later on the ones related to sites you suggested. THANKS !!

Question: In looking back at a few others I had taken more zoomed in, the guy and his flowers are much more prominent but the angle of the train and its presence in the photo is much less. What do you think -- should I crop this more so his story is more prominent? Or, since this was a motion challenge, is the point to show off the motion blur?

Best viewed small! (still practicing!)

Love the composition. A+

Very cool shot. I love the stillness of the guy studying his flowers verses the rapid transit of the train.. Real good :)

Cool shot!

Super shot! I love your composition, and the contrast between the contemplative rose man and the speeding train. Did you use a tripod for this photo?
February 15th, 2013
@anazad511 @jodimuli @lea2012 @kevinmckay @karenpics @pflaume -- thank you all for such immediate and supportive responses! The photo was taken without a tripod -- mine is big and sturdy but a little cumbersome for travel.

Funny story: tonight, I saw a man photographing in Madison Square Garden and we began chatting about a tripod. I commented on how heavy good quality ones are, and he said, yes, but look what you get -- and showed me spectacular photos!

Great photo! I think this composition is perfect for the movement challenge. True, the train does draw the eye away from the guy with the roses, but I love this composition. Lots to study!

I like the contrast between the extreme velocity of the train coming and the
stillness of the guy looking at his flowers. Very effective, indeed.

Super shot, absolutely nailed it, you've captured the sense of movement perfectly, great composition and perfect exposure, well done:)
February 15th, 2013
It's a great captured moment!
February 15th, 2013
great photo - love the blur you created
February 15th, 2013
Absolutely terrific shot Junko What speed was that train doing to be so totally blurred in just under half a second exposure?
February 15th, 2013
Great shot. The blur is fantastic. Like the man and his flowers too.
February 15th, 2013
Wonderful shot Junko! Great motion blur.

I think this is perfect for the challenge! What a great photo
February 15th, 2013
congrats on rising to the challenge! can't wait to see your next!
February 16th, 2013
Great composition. I think it's fine were the man is. I'd maybe try a bit shorter exposure to get more detail on the train. But what do I know.
February 16th, 2013
congratulations - great motion! I like this crop for the challenge accent. :))

Pam
Excellent!!!
February 16th, 2013
Ha! This is great - we're seeing the train how the preoccupied man would probably see it. Fav
February 16th, 2013
This is excellent work! ...especially for being done without a tripod.
February 17th, 2013
No crop required IMHO. Super shot with real velocity!

@johnmnewman -- thanks for you support, your teaching and most of all for a great challenge that was my perfect "next step"!

@tford -- thanks for noting the composition . . . I think I mostly got "lucky" but I did keep that guy in my frame as I moved to each side of him . . .

@mara19500 @blincodave -- Velocity! Hadn't thought of it, but you are right -- I can feel it still.

@tishpics @ruthhowell @rachelwithey @roadshow @pammerritt -- many thanks!

@steampowered -- I took shots as the train came in, and as it left I took three in a row, and this was the last one so it was speeding away! Did you see the alternate version in my other album? It shows a slower speed, and therefore, the shapes of the door are more visible.

@lynnb -- thanks for letting me know how to "notify" people. I put them in the tag section as well -- does that work, too?

@vankrey @bardejov -- you know a lot! I sincerely appreciate your suggestions. Please take a look at the photo in my "alternate" album where I post re-dos. http://365project.org/jyokota/challenges-and

@musicguy1982 -- after this photo was taken hand held, I went out and bought a smallish monopod to take on my travels.

@margiec -- a special super thanks for the FAV. :)

Sorry all, for the delayed thanks. Traveling in slow internet land again!

Fantastic shot -- but the alternative one is amazing.
February 17th, 2013
@jyokota Hi Junko. I think that I prefer this one. Much more sense of motion.
February 17th, 2013
@steampowered @taffy -- I like how you "preferred" different ones because it reminds me of how important it is to keep in mind the purpose for why we prefer certain photos, and I also prefer different ones for different reasons. Thanks for your comments and for taking time to look at both!
February 17th, 2013
WOW. Fav! Love it! :)
February 18th, 2013
Excellent!!!
February 19th, 2013
This is great! Well done.
February 19th, 2013
This is a terrific motion shot. So smooth and sleek. I love the distance you have placed the subject at.
February 22nd, 2013
Really cool shot. I like the smooth blur of the subway and super long perspective. Sorry for not responding but back during this time my father past away and it's taken me some time to get back in the flow.
