I did it! Don't you think this is a good depiction of a Valentine's Day scene? This guy kept studying his flowers while waiting for the right train to arrive. (I showed him afterwards and he said it was ok to post.)
@johnmnewman challenged me to capture movement by experimenting with shutter speeds and exposure times. Being the great get-pushed partner that he is, he gave me scaffolding with very informative tips and even a link to a sample photo. Because I didn't have a filter I took his suggestion to do this in a dark place. I studied many people's photos and noted shutter speeds, exposure, etc. @taffy and I had taken a brief group lesson on night time settings and some of those ideas could apply but I simply had not taken the time to ever practice setting my shutter speed. This was just the nudge I needed. Clearly, I still need a lot of practice, but here's my first "in motion" photo taken alone.
@michaelelliott -- I'm posting a separate photo later on the ones related to sites you suggested. THANKS !!
Question: In looking back at a few others I had taken more zoomed in, the guy and his flowers are much more prominent but the angle of the train and its presence in the photo is much less. What do you think -- should I crop this more so his story is more prominent? Or, since this was a motion challenge, is the point to show off the motion blur?
Funny story: tonight, I saw a man photographing in Madison Square Garden and we began chatting about a tripod. I commented on how heavy good quality ones are, and he said, yes, but look what you get -- and showed me spectacular photos!
Great photo! I think this composition is perfect for the movement challenge. True, the train does draw the eye away from the guy with the roses, but I love this composition. Lots to study!
Wonderful shot Junko! Great motion blur.

@johnmnewman -- thanks for you support, your teaching and most of all for a great challenge that was my perfect "next step"!
@tford -- thanks for noting the composition . . . I think I mostly got "lucky" but I did keep that guy in my frame as I moved to each side of him . . .
@mara19500@blincodave -- Velocity! Hadn't thought of it, but you are right -- I can feel it still.
@steampowered -- I took shots as the train came in, and as it left I took three in a row, and this was the last one so it was speeding away! Did you see the alternate version in my other album? It shows a slower speed, and therefore, the shapes of the door are more visible.
@lynnb -- thanks for letting me know how to "notify" people. I put them in the tag section as well -- does that work, too?
@steampowered@taffy -- I like how you "preferred" different ones because it reminds me of how important it is to keep in mind the purpose for why we prefer certain photos, and I also prefer different ones for different reasons. Thanks for your comments and for taking time to look at both!
Really cool shot. I like the smooth blur of the subway and super long perspective. Sorry for not responding but back during this time my father past away and it's taken me some time to get back in the flow.

stillness of the guy looking at his flowers. Very effective, indeed.

@vankrey @bardejov -- you know a lot! I sincerely appreciate your suggestions. Please take a look at the photo in my "alternate" album where I post re-dos. http://365project.org/jyokota/challenges-and
@musicguy1982 -- after this photo was taken hand held, I went out and bought a smallish monopod to take on my travels.
@margiec -- a special super thanks for the FAV. :)
Sorry all, for the delayed thanks. Traveling in slow internet land again!
