Antique Hat Forms from Hamburg, Germany

Taffy and I went to an art festival today, and had fun photographing these hat forms. We were tempted to move them around and create our own composition but we managed to restrain ourselves and work with what was there.

Taffy's photo of an artist's creation: http://365project.org/taffy/365/2016-09-11

Light Room Lessons with Taffy have begun again, so all photos from this point forward will be created under her tutelage. Nice to have a live-in tutor who's available for consultation nearly 24/7.
Cool picture.

You made great use of the background to set off these unusual hat forms. From the other side, I never noticed the background I was standing in front of! I like the deep contrast.

I think my mother had the tall white hat ... we knicked named it the 'calf bucket'...

Cool capture. Love that 'scrambled' background.

I couldn't love this more!!! I "suffered" through millinery classes as a part of my fashion degree, but I might have been more inspired had I had a form like any of these to begin with! Aren't they just charming!!! I can just visualize the women wearing them!

Love the shapes of the hats! Great background too. How lucky you are to have Taffy as your resident LR teacher! Fav!

How funky! But what are they made of, are they light?

@agedrunner @taffy @julzmaioro @sangwann @happypat @joansmor @skstein -- Thank you all for your comments! It was imagining the people sitting at tables using these in their day-to-day lives, and wondering about the kinds of finished hats they turned out. Who wore them? @julzmaioro -- isn't it fun when an image connects us to our past? @Weezilou -- Louise! You took millinery classes?? You never cease to surprise with your wide range of interests and skills! @milaniet -- Taffy and I showed great restraint, and @will_wooderson -- because we restrained from picking them up, I have no clue how light they are. They seemed to be made of resin or something like that? Not sure if they were "hollow" I know some hat forms are wood but these didn't appear to be wood. Thank you all!

@jyokota haha...while getting my BFA I was specializing in Fashion Design... The millinery was "interesting" in that we were to design some sort of hat or head covering to complete every outfit we designed, but I've never liked wearing hats, so I hated to have to model some of my finished work. Vikki has visited me and of two years of classes, I saved "one hat" that I liked...and it decorats a period bedroom up north. I suppose it was "an art project"... (Vikki sent me a very old hat box to get with it!)

PS...if they're as old as they look, they wouldn't likely have been resin. I suspect they were highly shellacked as it was necessary to steam a hat to make it take shape (if it was felt, for instance). I still look at those beautiful forms and can envision the ladies wearing the resulting chapeaus!
