Terracotta Army in Xi'an by jyokota

Terracotta Army in Xi'an

Discovered by farmer in only 1976, this represents only a small fraction of the amazing fleet of soldiers buried near Xi'an, China, to accompany the emperor to his next life. While completely amazing in scale, scope, and individual likeness of each soldier, seeing them here brought me some feelings of sorrow for all the people who died creating this monument for an emperor. Reminded me of the slaves who made the pyramids in Egypt.

Needless to say, this place is packed with tourists jostling each other for a mere moment at the rail to take an unobstructed photo. Suddenly, I realized I was trapped by someone with a gigantic RRS tripod setting up in the very front, taking much longer than polite in situations like this! I hope nobody knocked over that tripod in getting to the front of the rail.

You did frightfully well! This is such a famous site - thought some went to the British Museum but couldn't be all of these. Just amazing!

Wow... amazing .. what a sight ..

What an incredibly powerful display. Some people are very selfish in this situation where everyone wants to have a decent chance to view the display.

So powerful. I went to an exhibition of a grouping of these warriors which toured and came to the British Museum in London. Just overwhelming looking at them and yet the size of this is almost shocking.
As to the tripods.....one wonders why they aren't banned in there when they are in so many places where crowds come.
I like your shot very much and it evokes many emotions.

What an interesting experience and great capture! I'm surprised they allowed tripods inside. Many places refuse to let you use them.

Fantastic picture.

@redy4et -- they should have refused here because it was unbelievably crowded and so much jostling for that front and center position!

so worth the worming through the crowd. Looks like you can get all around it .

An interesting photo on so many levels- the figures, the size of the place, the lines on the ceiling. Very nicely captured.

I have watched several documentaries on this amazing place. It is incredible what was created and like you pointed out also demonstrates the scope of human oppression. It would still be incredible to see. Excellent shot to show its size and scale.

I love the lines in this image and the way you've captured the expanse of the statues so well.
