San Marco in Receding High Tide

Due to the record flooding and high tides in Venice, I had been thinking that it's a good thing I went in March. But Caterina said, "Let's go to Venice!" and I realized, yes, this is an opportunity to document something unusual. The tide had largely receded and things were starting to dry up, but the walking planks indicate how high the water had been, and the emptiness of the square indicates the lack of tourists. It was an unusual day in Venice, but one we enjoyed very much.

All those lovely buildings with marble like columns! I do hope there is no permanent damage!

Beautiful, Junko! I love the sharpness of this and the perfect rendition of the atmosphere, including the dark sky. Not a postcard! Fav

Yes, excellent thought to document this. Still a place of great beauty even in its struggles.

Amazing building with all those columns. Hopefully not too much water damage although I suspect that will not be the case.

Oh gosh, will Venice ever recover properly??

The picture sure tells a story of the sorry state Venice is in.

My favourite place to visit - so sad to see the lovely buildings flooded!

What a commentary this is. The photo I saw showed people walking on the platforms - and still walking in water. A preview of more to come?......

How lucky you are to be able to pop over to Venice!!

I like pictures that tell a story. Nicely done.

I believe there will be more opportunities in the future. Not a good time to be living where the tides are rising. And more places will experience this - my belief anyway.

Glad the water is residing and the rain is easing off, you captured the story so well!

Great capture of the event Junko. I'm glad that the water is receding.

How interesting! What a unique opportunity.

Great capture but so sad to see this. A great amount of damage has been done and no immediate solutions.

What a treat to have seen this in person, though what a tragedy overall for all the ones who have been suffering through it. And especially knowing it is likely only to get worse. Sounds like it's been a terrific trip!

THIS is how I remember the scene here! We were there on a rainy day and it was high tide... Back home, the following week, there was a news story about someone scuba diving in the plaza!

Oh my. Glad you chose to go to Venice
