The Light is SO Bright!

Aerogarden, Day One (actually taken March 14) Inspired by @ukandie1 I am posting the beginning of my aerogarden attempt. I have zero experience with growing anything, ever, but here's hoping that in the days (rather, months) of being cooped inside, I may have an herb garden. Here's a link to Andie's healthy and thriving aero gardens! Mine has now been growing 2 weeks like hers but it doesn't look nearly as well grown.

We use the aerogarden in the winter. We love having fresh lettuce when we need it. Good luck with your garden.

Wow - looks like something from outer space. Good luck with your new venture. Hopefully you’ll turn out to have green fingers. I have never seen such a nice growing unit like this.

keep us posted no matter how well it works :)

@shutterbug49 -- which size do I need to get to grow lettuce? This one is their smallest one, and many seem to be mostly for herbs.
@dide -- I smiled at the thought that you would have NO need to have such a tiny growing anything given your big spaces you have!
@koalagardens -- Sure -- that gives me something to photograph!

I'm intrigued by this process. Looks otherworldly!

That 8 section size is exactly what we have. You have to keep moving the light up and we harvest from the outside of each plant to give them some “breathing” room. If they start to do poorly, we have actually had to gently rip off the paper at the top of each cup because it seems to pinch them. I’d say they were probably about 4 inches tall before we had to do that. I just put this old photo up so you can see how it looked after two months. https://365project.org/shutterbug49/52wc/2020-03-30

You will love it, at least I do. I love having fresh herbs handy. I also have started some and transferred to soil before they got too big and the root system became a huge mess. Most have done okay. We have a very short growing season here.

@darylo -- Hellloooooo, Daryl! Once the herbs grow, I'll be looking for your guidance on what to do with it all. I still remember your yummy cooking . . . .

@shutterbug49 -- thanks for the tips! I have no idea what to do once they actually start growing so this is helpful info. I'll go take a look at your photo of two months growth. Seems we will still be inside for two months yet.

@joysabin That's good info, too -- so how do I know when it's "too big:" and "roots not-yet-a-mess"?

This is the second aerogarden I have seen on here today - I have never heard of them before! Must explore what they are and how they work

I am a fellow brown thumb! But I talked talked to my resident green thumb (aka Nik), and her one thought was top off the water every few days rather then wait for the light to blink, which I have been doing because she told me that once I got it set up!

I did have one pod (parsley) not germinate, hence the lavendar pod from Nik. Once things start to grow they get very aggressive, especially the dill! Just be patient, looking forward to your growth!

@jgpittenger @golftragic @casablanca @ukandie1 @domenicododaro
Thank you for your comments. I purchased this during the winter thinking it would be nice to have fresh herbs but didn't start it until March 14, so this is now a couple of week ago. I just ordered a second one for salad greens. I think we will be housebound for a long time.
@domenicododaro -- my friend in Brazil keeps referring to this as a set from "Lost in Space" I'm hoping to have herbs to cook with (says the person who doesn't even know how to use herbs)

@jyokota We have a State of Emergency declared in Victoria which means severe restrictions on what movement is allowed. In essence, we can shop for essentials, go to medical appointments and exercise (outside) so long as social distancing is observed. I like your Brazilian friend's notion, and s/he's absolutely right too. Good luck with your herbs - lots of advice on Dr Google re using them.
