Farmer's Market

Several weeks ago, a friend of mine challenged me to add some people shots into the Photo a Day gallery. Shooting people has always been a weakness of mine. I absolutely hate posed shots, and I never know what reaction I'll get from folks when I shoot candids. So the challenge to add people really is valid for what I'm trying to get out of this year-long exercise.

Today I decided to kill two birds with one stone. I rented a Canon 24-70 f2.8L lens to try since I'm considering upgrading my glass. Given the cost of the L-Series lenses, I really want to make sure I like them before spending a small fortune. Armed with my rental, I went to the Winter Farmer's Market in Bristol, RI. The lens performed like a champ. I honestly cannot believe the difference in clarity, color depth, focus speed, and a host of other points that make the L-Series truly superior to everything else in the Canon line. For today's upload, I opted to go with this candid shot of a local baker selling a loaf of fresh-baked bread. To me it tells just the right story and it really demonstrates the power of this lens. (Yes, I'll be adding one to my inventory.)

Post processing on this shot was minimal. The shot was taken at 1/50 sec, f7.1, ISO 200 with a flash from a Speedlight 580. I ran this through a Topaz Adjust detail filter which adds a touch of sharpening, and made a minor level adjustment to darken the background a bit, and that was it. The image was actually ideal right out of the camera, but I never could resist the urge to tamper anyway.
Great market shot!
