Dust to Dust

Not quite sure what I wanted to photograph today, I decided to visit Roger Williams Park to see if there was anything interesting going on. Adjacent to the Park is the Oakland Cemetery. There are some old stone buildings in the complex, and some graves decorated in a Caribbean and Central American style, so on a whim I circled through that cemetery. That's when I spotted these two grave diggers filling in a grave after a recent burial. I thought it would make a fascinating photo. Not showing the casket in the grave (which at the time of this photo only had a couple of shovels of dirt on it) was intentional.

Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted adaptive exposure, regions, color sensitivity sliders, contrast, boost black, and boost white. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.

Here's the high res version in Smugmug: http://kannafoot.smugmug.com/Photo-Challenges/PAD2013/i-M5tjvZ9/0/XL/2013%2012%2014_0002%20copy-XL.jpg
It is something we never see. What a sad job. I suppose they have become accustomed to it.

It's certainly a sobering image. Well crafted.
