Albion Traffic Signal

Albion Traffic Signal

Lincoln, Rhode Island

For today's photo, I decided to visit the historic village of Albion in Lincoln, RI. The intersection of Main Street and School Street is still home to the oldest traffic signal in the state. This flashing red and amber light dates to 1932. What's interesting is that it's built on top of an old public well. Now, that does pique my curiosity, so I'll now be in search of any 19th century photos of the area showing the well. I'd love to see how it blended into the foot, horse, and carriage traffic.

Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, boost black, boost white, and protect highlights. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.

Here's the high res version in Smugmug: http://kannafoot.smugmug.com/Photo-Challenges/PAD2014/i-RPbGKhn/0/XL/2014%2010%2031_0005%20copy-XL.jpg

Ron, the traffic signal is NOT in fact located over the last existing well. That well was located in front of the current post office.

@baycitywriter Hi Bob. Interesting news! The information that said it was built over the well comes from the Town of Lincoln's historical information site: http://www.lincolnri.com/historic/

Just FYI, within the last few days, this light has been hit by a car and removed from the street. There is an online petition to get it re-installed. Please visit the petition website. http://petitions.moveon.org/sign/return-albions-beacon.fb51?source=s.icn.fb&r_by=12931164
