Yesterday I was driving the backroads in search of a Snowy Owl as I'd heard some had migrated to my area.
No Snowy Owl but delighted to see this Ruffed Grouse. Altho not uncommon they are very elusive and very well camouflaged as they hide in thickets.
Reading up on them it was interesting that during the winter the scales on their toes grow out along the sides providing the bird with temporary snowshoes. That would be useful this year.
Lucky you..............I was just saying the other day.................why haven't we seen any grouse this year!
Great find and shot............a snowy would be awesome as well, maybe next time!
@dide@seattlite@onewing@janeandcharlie@yaorenliu Thanks for your comments. A few have quite unkindly noted his girth. He's more the size/shape of a chicken versus a streamlined soaring elegant bird. LOL @radiogirl A snowy swooped down and landed in my backyard a couple of days ago. I ran for the camera but he didn't stick around long. Likely just a mouse morsel. The hunt continues. @elatedpixie Thanks for stopping by.
