George Mason built the schoolhouse pictured here on the grounds of his plantation house, Gunston Hall. He hired tutors for his children from Great Britain. The school teacher lived in the room on the second floor.
The large old tree on the left is a Willow Oak that is over 120 years old. The English boxwoods in the photo are part of the old formal gardens.
What a fabulous shot and how wonderful that the school house is still standing. We have Edmonton's first one room school house which was built in 1881 still standing and is part of a museum today
This is a beautifully composed shot... very serene and calming. I really enjoy it when folks put the historical context of the shot; it adds a lot to the viewer's ability to appreciate what they are seeing. Thanks! :)
Love your composition and the whole tranquil feeling of this. Did this schoolroom have no windows? Or are they on the side we don't see in this lovely capture?
@tristansmum Thanks, Stephanie. It actually is a very tranquil place. I have an annual pass so I can go sit on the benches with a book. The school house does have a window on the far side, which is the garden side of the building.
