Cuban American urban artist Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada has created a fascinating landscape portrait in the field next to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. The portrait does not represent one individual, but reflects a composite of many people from diverse backgrounds who make up our nation.
Placement of the face required coordination between high-precision satellite navigation receivers on the ground and five orbiting satellites. The artist used topsoil and sand to create the facial features.
It was amazing to see and photograph this gigantic face today from the top of the Washington Monument. It is a temporary exhibit and will be visible during the month of October only.
@agedrunner@kwind@lealady@maggiemae@bkbinthecity@pdulis@vickisfotos@olivetreeann@pandorasecho@mittens@tonygig@ladymagpie@carolmw@tristansmum@paulaw@sbolden Thank you all for appreciating this particular photo. It was the first time I've been to the top of the Washington Monument, even though I've worked in the city for over 20 years! When I learned about the gigantic face on the Mall, I immediately ordered my advance ticket to go up and yesterday was finally the day. I was so thrilled that the rain and wind from the previous day cleared out. It was the most advance planning I've put into any photo during my 365 project so far. Thanks for your comments and favs!
This is my favorite of the three. Wow. Thanks for taking me up to the top of the Washington monument. I'd be too chicken to go up there in person anyway.
Wonderful shot - thanks for taking it and posting. I heard the artist get interviewed on the radio recently and was curious to see the results. Very cool concept and execution - from you and from the artist.
