Visiting a Pit House by kiwichick

Visiting a Pit House

Today I accompanied my daughters class on a visit to a First Nations Pit House. We were hosted by an elder who told the kids many of the traditions surrounding the pit house. She also talked about the plants and berries that were traditional to her people, and some of their customs and ceremonies. The house is dug into the ground, and covered on top with earth. It was a very cool field trip and I was glad I got to go along.
What a great experience. Our town has a "Big House" with an open pit for a fire in the centre of then room. there's a hole in the ceiling for the smoke.
