Bertha must have enjoyed her alfresco dining last night! Eucalyptus leaves are extremely low in calories (not surprising really). Most of the koalas digestive system is this one really big caecum (that's the tiny little appendix for us). It takes a long time to break those leaves down and get every bit of nutrition from them, and the koala sleeps the process off. They don't have much energy and can spend up to 22 hours a day sleeping ...
