Two things: 1, yep joey is a boy and 2, finding the pouch opening proved hilarious.
Firstly joey thought the opening was Maxine's ear. Him trying to push his way in would cause Maxine's eye's to close and her tongue to poke out. Now he is slowly working his way down to her shoulder, certain that if he just tucks his head and makes a burrowing motion the opening will magically appear! I could barely hold the camera still enough to take the series of still images and video as I laughed at the antics.
He is scrawny and nimble, but needs a bit of practice ....
Thank you for the awesome questions and comments on my photos.
@s4sayer It was pretty funny :) His eyes are open, he's now around 7 months old. But this was probably his very first time so far away from the pouch as to be right up the other end of mum. So it was more an orientation kind of issue. He will soon learn how big mum is and which end the pouch is in :)
@carolmw he did - Maxine helped guide him down to the right place eventually. It seems she gave him a good while of trying to figure it on his own first :)
@s4sayer oh if you look at the previous photo you can see his eyes :) mind you, having just spent 6 months in the pouch, his eyes work, but have to 'learn' how to see - his brain has to learn to make sense of what his eyes are 'seeing'
Mom was smart to let him get the feel of it before she nudged him in the right direction. I will backtrack in the next few days to get to see some of your previous pictures.
@shutterbug49 yep, middle of winter and the time for joeys to emerge and start eating leaf. joey still goes back in the pouch for a lot of the time, but by the start of spring he won't fit in there anymore and will have a big fluffy coat anyway :)
