Here is Jordan where we expect to find koalas - high in the top of a eucalypt tree.
This follows on from my photo of him 2 days ago deep in a patch of privet.
Thank you for the awesome questions and for the concerned posts as news is now being broadcast of the loss of hundreds of koalas in a nearby bush fire. The property here is safe, but the loss is devastating for wildlife and for the many people who lost all their possessions and homes.
At the time of posting this, there are still 75 fire incidents in NSW.
How awful to lose the iconic koalas to fire. It’s freezing cold out and raining in my part of Chicago today- Jordan is doing exactly what I’d like to be doing, napping!
@pyrrhula yes I'm afraid we just had a huge fire nearby and lost hundreds of koalas and around 50,000 hectares of prime koala forest. the fires are burning much hotter and longer than they once did and so the forests are not recovering the way they should. thank you for your concern, it is frightening indeed.
Lovely capture of Jordan asleep . Does it take long for new leaves to grow again on those bare branches. So sorry to hear about the fires and loss it must be heartbreaking for you all.
So sorry to hear about the loss of so many koalas and their habitat due to bush fires. what is this world coming to. not enough or no rain, feeling so sorry for
the people who lost their home.
So glad you and your koalas are safe.
Jordon looks quiet comfortable up there.
@wendyfrost thank you Wendy. If we were getting rain the trees would be covered in leaf, particularly since it is spring. The strategy eucalypt trees use to survive drought, is to drop as much leaf as possible. So the trees are increasingly bare and not regrowing and the koalas food supply is dropping. That is why I had the photo of him in an area of weed the other day - they are seeking shelter in places they wouldn't normally bother going but it is just relentlessly hot and dry and windy. Frightening stuff.
Prediction is no real rain until Feb, so the leaf is not going to grow back fast at all :(
Such a sad situation for the Koalas and wildlife in general. We too loose so much during the hot summer fires. A lovely shot of Jordan looking so comfy.
Great capture . Please take care.
So sad to hear about the fires in Australia!
the people who lost their home.
So glad you and your koalas are safe.
