Smokey really is growing fast now - will be independent by the end of the year and we still haven't confirmed girl or boy!
Thank you for the lovely words of support here, so exhausting living through the constant apprehension here as fires still burn even if the risks this week have lessened.
this is the most gorgeous picture! I really can't imagine the stress of what you are going through with the fires atm... it is just awful seeing the pictures of koalas with little mittens on :(
On the news here: a woman saved a koala with burns out of the flames. Saw her sprinkle it with water. The koala was transported to a hospital. Sad to sea its pain :-(
This is the quintessential koala shot - a thought though, given how sharp their claws are, how come mum doesn't get injured when a joey clings to her like this?
What a fabulous capture of this gorgeous pair. We are seeing such horrifying images on tv of koalas being burnt. I hope you get some relief very soon! Stay safe xx
Such a beautiful image of the two looking so healthy , when we see the horrors of the fires and the and the state of the Koalas that are save from the fires and taken to the hospitals . So , so distressing , even to just see the poor little victims !
@vignouse very thick coat is the first answer. second answer is that by the time she tells joey NO MORE the coat and skin on her shoulders is in pretty poor condition! :)
@sugarmuser hey Sharon. What is really sad is that no, not many at all. Our fires were so huge and so hot and fast, that hardly any koalas escaped. They were also in more remote locations than many of the Coffs Harbour and Port MacQuarie fires.
So far we have rescued about a dozen, and successfully released a mum and joey. Most have not survived. It's like this huge weight bearing down when we think about it.
@sugarmuser every tree is now critical - I drove to Lismore yesterday (17 km) and there were hundreds of dead/dying trees and shrubs, visible from the road, so how many trees are dying I fear to even start to think. These are not from fire, but from the drought conditions, so are on top of the more than one million hectares of forest that have burned. How are things up your way, you are safe?
Lovely pic.
Very smokey here today, your koala has a good name for the present situation. Hope he/she stays safe.
