town planner

The yellow-tailed black cockatoos come through this time every year and rip through tree bark to get borer grubs out of the tree trunks.
Sometimes this may kill a young tree, sometimes they break in a storm later, but they were doomed without the grub removal.
But if the tree lives, in around 80 - 100 years the wound will become a hollow. Hence I call them the town planners.
Thank you for the awesome comments and questions on my photos
they are really hard to get a good shot of too, well done here!

@pusspup they are, I crept around the trees with a few of them for over half an hour to get one shot I could use!

Nicely photographed. They are gorgeous birds, but agree they can be distructive, which is a real shame.

A very interesting explanation of what this bird does and how that fits the title. An well documented to see what it looks like up close, for those of us who never see one in person!

I sometimes wonder if we live on the same planet...

Sounds like we need some of them around here, as the wood borers are taking over the pines and killing every one that they get into. Great shot.

@rickster549 yep, people complain when bush is removed and the large parrots start destroying house, cars, power poles etc. but they have a job and boy do they do it well!

@vignouse is that because you don't have birds like these? our worlds are rather hugely different I think!

@koalagardens Sharing the diversity of our world is one of the lovely side benefits of 365..
