I favour terracotta saucers to provide drinking water for the wildlife (my spring fed pond has been dry for over a year now) because they are shallow and all insects can safely use them. You can see these ants on selective focus are drinking their fill. (I wonder what unit of measurement one would use to figure how much an ant belly holds?)
I always place a thick stick in the dish, long enough to go from one side to the other so that anything falling in has a way to climb out again. These ants were taking so long to have their drink I was quite fascinated watching them.
I have started cycling around them with my wildlife camera, but the images it takes are poor quality so no good for posting here. Still it gives me an idea of how much variety of wildlife find the water. I bought another dozen saucers today to add to the ever-growing number I have scattered through the property.
oh no I wouldn't bore here as my property is entirely under a conservation order. salination can certainly be an issue with bores.
I have water for the house, but this spring was important for the wildlife :(
That's so thoughtful of you :) Hope you are ok with the bushfires up your way - I heard on the news about many koalas losing their lives and immediately thought of you.
Great idea to use for a macro shot of an ant.. super.. love the picture but what you did is what i love the most.. taking care of all.. big and small :) so the fav is for you...
@gilbertwood thanks Denise. My property has not been in danger but that Rappville fire was only 70km away. It is true that we lost hundreds of koalas, around 50,000 hectares of prime koala habitat. An entire town burned down, thousands of livestock died and countless wildlife. We are all still stunned I think.
We only got about a dozen koalas into care and only one mum and joey made it. All the rest have died out there as getting into a fire area just isn't possible for so long after the flames are gone. thanks for your concern :)
